Adopting 101: The Do’s and Don’ts For The LGBT Community

Deciding to have kids is a beautiful and stressful thing to do, but deciding to adopt a child is even more stressful, especially for members of the LGBT community.

In a powerful and enlightening interview with husbands Thomas Ryan-Lawrence (Co-Owner of Gayborhood/COO) and Chris Ryan-Lawrence (Owner of ARK Leadership), they open up and share a couple of their do’s and don’ts when taking that first step in adopting. They tell of the relationship they have with the birth mother of their beautiful son, Noah, how he knows exactly who “Mama Tara” is, and  how they now have a blended family. They expressed that in the end they choose a open adoption (which can be hard), but keep an open line of communication with teh birth mother and put her first, which helped change her views on wanting to remain in their lives. They said, “She originally had no plans other than exchanging pictures, but after our first phone call and us just being who we are, it started evolving and she said she might want to take a more active role and see him more often.”

One major piece of advice they gave that came from the adoption agency was; “Our No. 1 priority is the birth mother; priority No. 2 is the child that we’re placing; priority No. 3 is you.”So, for all of the future parents that are looking into adopting, please take the time to read about it.

Supreme Court allows transgender military ban as the legal battle continues

Today, the Supreme Court of the United States has allowed President Donald Trump’s transgender military ban to go into effect; a ban that is both cruel and irrational to our community.

The policy was first announced by President Trump in July 2017 via Twitter. Since, the ban has faced legal battles in lower courts, resulting in nationwide injunctions prohibiting its implementation. SCOTUS’s decision today allows the ban to go into effect while the court decides whether to consider the merits of the case.
